The What and Why of Pre-MRI Interviews

To keep you safe, your doctor or MRI technician will interview you before scheduling your diagnostic test. These interviews are conducted for your protection, so it's important that you schedule and attend your interview without delay. If you've never undergone this type of screening for a medical procedure, here is some information about what you can expect.

The Usual Questions

The specific questionnaire used in your screening may vary somewhat from one MRI provider to another, but all are after the same information. Your doctor and technician will want to know if you have aneurysm clips, an IUD, heart stents or other pieces of metal in your body. You will also have to report any past medical procedures or surgeries as these will alert medical staff to possible pieces of metal or other complications that could occur. Medications and drug allergy information will also be requested.

Things to Report

There are a few things you should report to your doctor before scheduling your MRI, even if your interviewer fails to ask about them. Make sure your doctor and technician know if you have any of the following:

• Pacemaker
• Internal defibrillator
• Neuro-stimulator
• Metal implants of any kind
• Shrapnel or other metal pieces from a previous injury still in your body
• Tattoos
• Medication patches containing foil

Interview Results

Depending on your medical history and interview answers, you could be prevented from undergoing magnetic image testing. In the rare event that you are barred from the procedure, your doctor will find a different way to get the information he needs. You could also be prevented from getting the scan if you skipped your interview appointment. The interview is done for your safety, so most MRI centers will not perform the test without a written interview.
